On Staging the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival

Natsuno Takeshi

Welcome to the 38th Tokyo International Film Festival.

As in previous years, the festival will be held in venues across Hibiya, Yurakucho, Marunouchi, and Ginza districts, all of which have a long history with film culture. This year, we'll be establishing the Asian Students' Film Conference as a new section, with the aim of contributing to the training of tomorrow's Asian filmmakers. The festival will also feature a special selection of Brazilian movies to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Brazil and Japan. With an additional selection of Taiwanese movies, this year's program is bound to be quite a colorful one, and I hope you'll be looking forward to it as much as we are.

In addition, the ever-popular annual opening red carpet event on Hibiya-Nakadori Street will be organized in a format that allows even more people to see it this year.

Furthermore, keeping with last year's spirit, we'll be working with many cooperators so that participants from the filmmaker and visitor sides have an opportunity to mingle at TIFFCOM2025, the audio visual content market held during part of the Tokyo International Film Festival's run.

With that said, we look forward to your visit to these ten exciting, event-packed autumn days.

Looking over the state of the world this past year, we are faced with the many ongoing divisions and confrontations that keep us in uncertainty.

We hope that, in the midst of these conflicts, we can contribute to creating a more peaceful and harmonious world by deepening our understanding of one another through the appreciation and discussion of film as a medium.

In order to achieve that, we want to give a stronger focus to international exchange and dialogue this year. Additionally, we will also be making an active contribution to important topics like talent development and gender issues.

As an Asian film festival, we would like to further strengthen our relationship with the rest of the continent while pursuing the diversity and possibilities of film, an endeavor in which we are sincerely hoping to receive your full support.
