The 38th Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), to be held from October 27 to November 5, 2025, is pleased to announce that celebrated actress Takiuchi Kumi will serve as this year’s Festival Navigator.
Takiuchi has appeared in numerous high-profile films, including two titles from last year’s TIFF: Teki Cometh, winner of the 37th TIFF Tokyo Grand Prix, and Ravens, which screened in the Nippon Cinema Now section. She is an avowed cinephile, and is sure to convey her enthusiasm at the 38th edition of TIFF.
Comments from Takiuchi Kumi
I am honored to serve as a festival navigator for this year’s Tokyo International Film Festival. I never imagined I would have the opportunity to participate in this festival, which holds such a special place in my heart, in such a role, and I am truly delighted. I’m excited to undertake this new challenge and will do my utmost to fulfill my role. TIFF continues to evolve and is introducing new projects this year as well. I hope many of you will join us and share in the magic of cinema together.
Takiuchi made her film debut in 2012, and has appeared in numerous films and TV series. She played her first leading role in Greatful Dead (2014), directed by Uchida Eiji. She has starred in Twisted Justice (2016), Side Job (2017) and Underdog (2020). She won the Best Newcomer Award at the 41st Yokohama Film Festival and the Kinema Junpo Best Actress Award for the 2019 film It Feels So Good, followed by wins for Best Actress at the 31st Japan Movie Critics Awards and the 31st Japanese Professional Movie Awards for A Balance (2020). Her outstanding performance in the latter film also earned her international acclaim. Takiuchi went on to appear in Teki Cometh (2023), Ravens (2024), Kokuho (2025), How Dare You? (2025), and Hero’s Island (2025).
As a film enthusiast, Takiuchi also revealed her three favorite films — Sing Street (2016), Talentime (2009) and The Match Factory Girl (1990) — helping to launch TIFF’s film-matching campaign entitled “Find One to Watch at TIFF.”
In this SNS campaign, TIFF calls for X users to post their three favorite titles and recommends what to watch in TIFF’s 15-film Competition section, based on their taste in films. The campaign evolved from audience comments about the difficulty in deciding which films to see among a selection that includes works by emerging talents, and about which information is often limited. The campaign aims to provide a friendly guide to the vanguard of world cinema. A What-to-Watch chart based on the answers collected in the campaign is also set to be released.
