We are pleased to announce that the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) signed a Memorandum of Cooperation in September 2025.
The first Memorandum between the two festivals was signed in 2015, but implementation was put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic. As international exchanges have resumed and deepened since the pandemic, discussions were held during TIFF Managing Director Sakagami Hitoshi’s visit to Shanghai in June 2025, resulting in a mutual agreement to renew the Memorandum.
As two of Asia’s leading film festivals, TIFF and SIFF will continue to strengthen collaboration, particularly through mutual recommendations of films for screening and other cooperative initiatives.
Excerpt from the Memorandum of Understanding:
1.Mutual Showcasing of Festival Films
2.Film Recommendations
3.Mutual Recommendation of International Jury Members
4.Mutual Invitation to the Festivals
At the Shanghai International Film Festival held in June this year, She Taught Me Serendipity (directed by Ohku Akiko), which was screened at last year’s TIFF, was presented as a TIFF-recommended film. At this year’s TIFF, She Has No Name (directed by Peter Chan), recommended by the SIFF, will be screened in the Gala Selection section.
